About a month ago, I took Taylor and Sam to wrestling practice. While I was there I ran into a friend that I hadn't seen in a while. She is a mom to one of Clay's football teammates, but also happens to be the office manager of the orthopedic associates that we are now considering to be our primary physician. I saw her and we started talking and I said, "I haven't seen you in so long, it must be because no one has a broken bone right now." She said, "You better find some wood to knock on." I laughed and ignored the advice to be superstitious. And sure enough, last week she came and found Ryan and I in the waiting room when we went to have Ryan's ankle break looked at. We had a laugh about the "knock on wood" conversation of a couple of weeks previous and then went on.
Yesterday afternoon, Ryan and the boys and I were talking about who in our family has broken what bones, who has broken the most (Sam's broken three bones, but Taylor's broken his clavicle three times as well as his leg), and who has cost us the most in medical bills (Zach still has that one hands down with his expensive arrival into the world). Clay and Zach congratulated each other on being the only ones to still remain unbroken, and I thought, "Please don't jinx me."
Sure enough. This morning at 11:30-ish, the phone rang. I recognized the middle school's phone number on the caller id and really, really hoped it would be Zach on the other end of the line. It wasn't. It was the school nurse. In P.E. today, there was a game of hockey, and in defending a shot, Zach took a stick across the hand.
Maybe I should try knocking on wood next time. Maybe it will help.

WHOA!!!! I really don't know whether to laugh or cry for you! Have you ever considered writing a book about the joys of mothering 4 boys?? It just might be a best seller and make you lots of money so that you can pay all those medical bills:) Hang in there!!
Oh Sue, may there be hidden chocolate in your cupboards and caffeine in your fridge.
Oh wow. I hate those conversations that end up happening. How crazy. So sorry - for all of you.
SUE!!! This is getting to be laughable. . .right?? Hang in there!
